The Northern Cape has an immense potential to be a key driver for growth in the country however after engaging with a potential client/department it was clear to us that at times some ideas are just for the wrong audience resulting in consulting and advisory firms as ours wasting Time and Resources. Seeing similar ideas find life in a different jurisdiction also explains the need to look beyond local markets at times.
The Opportunity
We had come up with a research
business case for a particular department to be able to monitor and do an
online perception analysis report on the province to see how they were being
perceived by international markets and investors. It involved desktop research,
interviews and existing data that was to be analyzed. Oddly in our findings we
picked up the water crisis was a key search and Kimberley shutdown with our
techstack in place.
Tourism is a key driver for the
Northern Cape and also a key aspect to consider is the SADC Tourism Programme
with one of its goals being Improving and defending the tourism reputation and
image of the region image Communication Programme, formulate a regional tourism
communication strategy, conducting a regional public relations programme and developing
a tourism crisis communication strategy

The initial meeting
We met with 2 directors from the
particular department who showed very much key interest and had invited the
relevant party from a strategic unit which needed these sentiments more than
their desks, then we set up a more impactful meeting and met with other
stakeholders within the local tech value chain mainly Mlab and the Northern
Cape Innovation forum. The meeting took place on a Monday morning at 10.00 and
nobody besides the two directors attended the meeting. It was a clear signal of
disinterest from the relevant party and the proposal not asking flight.
MASCOM AND THE RFQ FOR
ONLINE REPUTATION.
MASCOM is a state-owned telecoms
provider within the Republic of Botswana and had taken out a RFQ seeking the
services of a company to assist its company with research on its online
reputation. This was such a great sign of confidence for us however we didn’t
have the resources to bid for this opportunity assitit would have required us
to get a local partner with the implementation of their citizen economic
empowerment policy and the preparation of the document had already demoralized
he two hybrid advisory teams that facilited this failed project.
What prospects don’t usually
realize is that they have the ability to to make life changing decisions for
companies hence we can agree to an extent with the issues people have had
towards cadre deployment and how people in government tend to not be innovative
to new ideas particularly in developmental states such as RSA, Northern Cape
province. The motto for the province is to build a modern, growing economy
however that posture is quite questionable if entrepreneurs locally cannot be
given the platform to create disruptive and innovative businesses that can
improve the high unemployment rates within the capital city and its quality of
life.
